CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“We need to get to the studios early,” said Beckett to his driver. “I’ve got to find a way to go live and stop all this bullshit storytelling about me.”

There was silence in the car, and he noticed it was slowing.

“What’s wrong? Why are you slowing down?” he yelled.

“Uh, sir,” said the driver, pointing up.

“What? What the hell are you pointing at?” He stared out the window, craning his neck, and looked up. Jumping out of the car, he stared at the billboard, his younger face staring back at him. It moved from still images to clips of him in action.

“No! No!” he screamed. “Who the fuck did this?”

“I don’t know, sir, but we’re attracting attention,” said the driver. Beckett stared at the cars as they slowed, each one taking pictures and their own footage of the incident. Then he jumped into the backseat.

“Get me the fuck out of here!”

His driver sped off toward his private studio, parking in his assigned spot. He didn’t see them, but from a window above, Angel and Code gave a sly smirk. Both men turned and busied themselves at their computers.

“Hey! Hey, tech guy! What the fuck is his name?” he asked Karen, the receptionist.

“Oh, it’s Will and Luke,” said the woman.

“Will! Luke!”

“Yes, sir,” said Will, standing in the doorway.

“Get my photo off that fucking billboard on I-5,” he growled.

“A billboard, sir? Uh, well, those are controlled electronically at the headquarters for the billboard company,” he said calmly.

“I don’t give a shit! Get my photo off of that billboard. You were hired because you knew how to hack, so get to hacking.” Code nodded, turning to peck on his computer as Beckett watched him.

“Sir, that billboard is duplicated on all their billboards. Someone bought every single one of them across the country. It’s more than four thousand billboards.”

“Are you fucking deaf? I said get it down!” he yelled. Code turned, giving a smirk to Angel. He entered in a series of codes and finally pressed ENTER. When he did, the visual of the billboards changed.

“Oh, oh,” he said, turning to look at Beckett.

“What the fuck does that mean?”

“Well, whoever did this was obviously very smart and knew what they were doing.” Angel kicked him under the table, and he winced. “The billboards had a virus placed in them. When I tried to clear it, it brought up something far worse.”

Beckett stared at the billboards flashing all over the country. He shook his head, then threw his briefcase across the room.

“Fix this. Fix this, or you’re fired!”

“I’ll do my best, sir,” said Code.

“You!” he said, pointing to Angel. “You do research and shit. Find who the fuck did this. Give me their names, and I’m going to destroy them. How dare they fuck with me. How dare they! Karen? I need you in my office. I’m tense.”

The woman blushed, looking down at the floor, and stood, swallowing back the obvious bile. Angel started to move toward her, but Code gripped his arm.

“Not yet. We can’t interfere yet unless he hurts her,” he whispered.
